Pontypridd Assembly Member Mick Antoniw has taken the oath to confirm his appointment as Counsel General for Wales in the presence of Dame Nicola Davies, Presiding Judge of the Wales Circuit.
Mick Antoniw, was formally appointed Counsel General at a meeting of the Welsh Assembly on 21 June, following a recommendation by First Minister Carwyn Jones. The Cabinet role appointment has also been approved by the Head of State.
As the Welsh Government’s Law Officer, the Counsel General is the Welsh Government’s chief legal advisor and represents it in the courts.
Mick Antoniw said:
“It is a great honour for me and this Constituency to have been appointed to this important Welsh Government position. As legal advisor to the Welsh Government I will promote the interests of the people of Wales during important Constitutional debates on the Wales Bill and future legislation in issues such as a Bill or Rights. Form me it is also important to press the case for greater access to justice in the light of the Tories virtual abolition of Legal Aid and its Courts closure programme. Supporting and promoting Justice for the people of Wales will be a cornerstone of my work as well as my statutory responsibilities in respect of Welsh Legislation and the development of the Welsh Legal Jurisdiction.”
