AM SUPPORTS WALES BECOMING A NATION OF SANCTUARY

Local Assembly Member Mick Antoniw is taking the opportunity of Refugee Week to celebrate the contributions made by those who seek sanctuary in the Wales.

In January The Welsh Government published the ‘Nation of Sanctuary – Refugee and Asylum Seeker Plan’, which is driving forward this ambition for Wales. In just under five months Wales has already seen significant progress in delivering actions contained in the plan.

The Welsh approach has attracted international attention and is endorsed by the United Nations.

Mick Antoniw said:

“As the son of a Ukrainian refugee I know what it means to be displaced from your country of birth and the life changing effect of being welcomed into a new country.”

“I fully support the Welsh Labour Government decision to make Wales a Nation of Sanctuary.    Refugee Week is an opportunity to bring together people from all backgrounds to improve understanding between communities and enhance social cohesion.”

“Wales has enjoyed a long history of welcoming refugees, and we continue to benefit from their skills and entrepreneurial spirit.”

“I am delighted to see the United Nations have singled Wales out for praise.”
